While living in Cleveland, he worked in refrigeration and taught Irish dancing at the West Side Irish American Club on Madison Avenue and West 98th Street. He was one of the main organizers of the first Cleveland Feis (competition) in the late 1950s. He taught several teachers at the Masterson School of Irish Dance, including the owner, Bobby Masterson. Shanahan and his wife Sally, have three children, Dennis, Colleen, and Erin. The family moved to New York in the 1960s. Living in New York, Shanahan concentrated on Irish drama, and performed in many Irish productions in New York. He and his family returned to Dublin, Ireland ca. 1980. The collection consists of images of Kevin Shanahan and native Clevelanders, in addition to out of state dancers participating at a number of Irish Dance competitions in Cleveland, Ohio. | | | | Creator: | Volunteers for Clevelanders in Israel | | | | Dates: | 1979-1994 | | | | Abstract: | Volunteers for Clevelanders in Israel (VCI) was founded in 1978 as a non-profit organization with the goal of helping people from Cleveland, Ohio, who had moved to Israel. VCI offered services to Clevelanders planning a long-term or permanent move to Israel and to former Clevelanders now living in Israel. The group was founded by Shirley Goodman, who served as its director until her death in 2006. In Cleveland, VCI offered weekly workshops for those planning to move to Israel. Topics included packing and shipping, buying appliances, culture shock, and dealing with Israeli bureaucracy. VCI also offered Hebrew language classes. In Israel, the majority of services were provided through the Daniel Haas Center, located in Jerusalem, opened in 1983. Former Clevelanders could rely on VCI to help them stay connected to one another and to friends and relatives in Cleveland. A directory of Clevelanders living in Israel was published every few years, and meetings and social events were held regularly. Other services offered included employment assistance, housing interviews, counseling, emergency financial aid, and interest free loans. The Daniel Haas Center closed in 1996 due to lack of funding. VCI now continues its work through the Cleveland Hometown Association in Israel. The collection consists of approximately 300 color and black and white photographs. | | | | Creator: | Cleveland Council on Soviet Anti-Semitism | | | | Dates: | 1975-1980 | | | | Abstract: | The Cleveland Council on Soviet Anti-Semitism (CCSA) was a volunteer organization whose goals were to assist Soviet Jews to emigrate, to inform the American public about Jewish activities in the Soviet Union, and to monitor anti-Semitism in the USSR. The CCSA, the first organization of its kind in the world, was established in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1963 through the efforts of NASA scientists Louis Rosenblum and Abe Silverstein, Veterans Administration Hospital psychologist Herbert Caron, and Rabbi Daniel Litt. The four men, members of Beth Israel The West Temple, were supported by the congregation which provided volunteer workers and office space for the CCSA. The CCSA sought to educate the public regarding the plight of Soviet Jews at a time when the problem was not generally recognized. The Council organized letter writing campaigns to government officials, sponsored rallies and protests, corresponded with Soviet Jews, and lobbied Congress and the President in an effort to link economic aid to the Soviet Union to the issue of human rights. Between 1964 and 1969 the CCSA produced a handbook for community activity, created a motion picture and slide show depicting the problem of Soviet Jewry, and published Spotlight, the nation's first newsletter on Soviet Jews. By 1965, the CCSA counted 600 members. Its success was recognized nationally and it became a model for other local groups. By 1969, five other councils had been established and in February 1970 the six organizations joined to create the Union of Councils for Soviet Jews (UCSJ) to share information and to strengthen the movement nationally. In 1966, the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland became the first Federation in the U.S. to allocate funds for this issue by providing funds for the CCSA's educational activities. He served as the staff photographer of the Cleveland Plain Dealer from 1908 until his retirement in 1953. The collection consists of photographs taken by Andrew Kraffert during his career as Plain Dealer news photographer. They cover a wide range of subjects including sporting events, especially baseball, American presidents and other political figures, prominent personalities, major events in Cleveland social and political life, including crimes and disasters, parades and celebrations, political campaigns, visits of numerous public figures, etc., as well as views of Cleveland structures and portraits of groups and individuals. The collection is especially useful to the study of early 20th century baseball, with many images of baseball players and action shots of the 1919 and 1920 World Series. The presidential photographs include presidents from William McKinley to Harry Truman, as well as an image of Abraham Lincoln, ca. 1860. There are also photos of many national and international figures. This collection also is significant for the study of Cleveland history as it helps to document events in Cleveland during the early part of the twentieth century. | | | | Creator: | Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra | | | | Dates: | 1940-1987 | | | | Abstract: | The Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1938, by three musicians, Irving Klein, Alfred Zetzer, and Robert Zupnick. They envisioned the orchestra as a training ground for young musicians seeking orchestral experience towards future professional careers and as an outlet for talented amateur musicians. F. Karl Grossman, professor of music at Western Reserve University, was the first conductor and music director of the group, serving for 25 years. Affiliated with Western Reserve University in its early years, the orchestra performed at various locations. Later conductors included Zoltan Rozsnyai, Jose Serebrier, Robert Marcellus, John Ross, and William Slocum. In 1973, the orchestra first sponsored the Young Person's Concerto Competition, later renamed the Frieda Schumacher Concerto Competition. The orchestra also extended its outreach into the community, playing concerts for specific ethnic groups at the Bohemian National Hall, for the Polish-American Congress and the Lithuanian community, and at annual Martin Luther King Day concerts held at Cuyahoga Community College. Beginning in 1976, the orchestra performed under the name Cleveland Civic Orchestra, changing its name back to the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra in 1981. Throughout its history, the orchestra performed new works by local composers, including F. Karl Grossman, Leslie Adams, Ernest Miller, Robert Rollin, Daniel Shell, and Peter Ware.
